Florence's Duomo, one of the most famous cathedrals in Italy, is always a sight to behold. It's made up of 3 main areas: its monumental Dome, built by the architect Filippo Brunelleschi; the Baptistry; and the OPA Museum. Together, these 3 spaces house some of the most important works of art to be found in Tuscany. A visit here is an essential part of any trip to Florence!
Our tour starts in Piazza del Duomo, the elegant square on which the Cathedral sits. We'll admire the Duomo complex, chat about its history and development, and learn about some of the iconic works of art that grace it.
Next, for those who wish to climb to the top of the Dome, we'll get ready for a good workout - a 450+ step ascent. We'll go slow and chat about the art and architecture on our way up. Once on top, we get to enjoy our reward; a stunning panoramic view over the city.
Once back in the square, we head across it to enter the beautiful Baptistery.
From there, we enter the OPA Museum, where many of the famous works that were once on and in the cathedral have since been placed for safekeeping (including Lorenzo Ghiberti's famous bronze doors). We'll learn about the ingenious building techniques employed in the cathedral's construction and see countless stunning works from famous artists.
Please note: The climb to the top of the Dome is optional. If you would rather not do the climb, we'll have an extra hour to do something else. With that time we can go for a short tour of Florence's historic center, climb up Giotto's bell tower (a much shorter climb), or visit the Crypt of Santa Reparata.
Your entrance ticket - the Brunelleschi Pass - includes access to the Dome, Giotto's bell tower, and the crypt. If we don't visit those sites together, you can enter them within 72 hours from the date of our tour (before or after).
