A Day in San Gimignano & Certaldo

On this day trip into the Tuscan countryside we get both touristy and off the beaten path.
The day starts with a lovely hour drive from Florence (or nearby) to San Gimignano, passing through the heart of the Chianti wine region. In San Gimignano, we'll leave the car behind and go for a walk to admire the famous towers and the pretty medieval streets. As one of Italy's most famous towns, the crowds can get pretty intense, so we'll do our best to dip down some side streets and weave our way around.
After, it's back in the car for a pretty drive uphill to a great nearby winery where we'll stop for an excellent lunch paired with a wine tasting. The winery's dining area (outdoors in good weather) has lovely views of both San Gimignano and the surrounding countryside.
Barely 15 minutes away from the vineyard is the charming medieval town of Certaldo, which is blissfully off of the tourist path. We'll go for a walk down its tight alleyways and sleepy streets, enjoying the quiet and authentic atmosphere. The town is also famous for its sweet onions, so if you're interested we can also stop to try some of the interesting products they make with them. For literature fans, this is also the birthplace of one of Italy's great writers, Giovanni Boccaccio.
Because Certaldo and San Gimignano are so different from each other, I think they pair perfectly! We see a highlight place and then an off the beaten path one.
From Certaldo, we finish the day with another scenic drive back to Florence.
