For anyone interested in history and architecture (and beautiful countryside scenery!), these two ancient sites - Segesta and Selinunte - offer a pretty unbeatable combination that take us through the glory of Sicily’s past. I know that when most people think of ruins in Sicily they immediately picture the Valley of the Temples, and while that’s of course an incredible place, these two sites offer similarly stunning ruins but with a fraction of the crowds.
After a full day exploring these ancient marvels, you’d be forgiven for feeling like Indiana Jones!
Our journey begins as we leave the sparkling Mediterranean coast behind, venturing inland to the hilltop treasures of Segesta's Archaeological Park. Here, we will see and do quite a lot but the magnificent and massive Doric Temple and the ancient Stone Theater are of course highlights. The views here are incredible as well, with mountains surrounding us and beautiful fields extending out endlessly.
After a few hours at Segesta, we’ll make a quick 40-minute drive to seaside Selinunte, another awe inspiring ruin complex. This was an expansive Greek colony, but it had a puzzlingly short history that led to it essentially becoming forgotten for around a thousand years, so it’s a fascinating place to visit.
Before visiting the ruins, we’ll stop for lunch in the nearby town of Marinella di Selinunte, which is a pretty little place in its own right, and very nice for a meal and wander about.
After lunch, we’ll head over to the ruins of Selinunte, where we’ll marvel at the genuinely colossal temples on the Eastern Hill as well as the commanding hilltop Acropolis to the south. Perched high above the azure Mediterranean, Selinunte offers some of the most marvelous coastal views in Western Sicily, so the scenery here matches the architectural wonders beside it. It’s pretty incredible standing among towering ancient ruins while looking out over the sea!
We’ll typically spend a couple of hours at the archaeological site, after which we’ll hop back in the car for the 1.5 hour drive back to Palermo. From the ancient city to the modern one, just like that!
